  1. Superintendent’s Report:

Mr. Anastasio said the opening of school went very well.  All K-6 students have Chromebooks.  Plans were made to give new chrome books to grades 7 and 8 students through the MLTI program but only half of them were delivered.  Some other Chromebooks were repurposed so all 7 and 8 graders will have devices in their hands next week.  Grades 9-12 will receive their Chromebooks next week.  Devices that should have been returned last June are still coming in and Mr. Anastasio asked parents/students to please turn them in so they can be inspected, repaired, cleaned and then repurposed to provide devices for all students.  Mr. Anastasio said the ASD is choosing not to have a remote option for two reasons;  (1) we are following the CDC guidelines that strongly recommends that all students be in school in person and (2) with all students in school providing a remote choice would be difficult and almost impossible for the district to manage.  However, if a child has to quarantine, their Chromebook will allow them to access, their materials, assignments and resources that other students are having direct access to in the classroom.  COVID is here and Dr. Nirav Shah said that in Maine it almost comes down to either you get vaccinated or you are going to get the variant so COVID may take a bigger toll this year than it did last year.  Currently there are COVID cases in every one of our schools.

  1. Assistant Superintendent’s Report:

Ms. Grondin toured all the schools on opening day.  She said it was exciting to see the all students and staff in school and enjoyed seeing all the energy and positivity.  She said she has been spending a lot of time with school nurses who are working hard tracking COVID cases, close contacts and learning new standard operating procedures. There have been 71 students and staff identified as close contacts.  Some are quarantined some are not.  Nineteen students and staff have tested positive for COVID.  She said if a child does not feel well, they need to stay home and if someone in the family is testing for COVID they should keep the child home until the test results are known. Schools are getting ready for pool testing.  If someone signed up to participate in pool testing there are four ways they can be exempt from having to quarantine: (1) they are vaccinated (2) participated in the pool testing (3) have had COVID in the last 90 days or (4) universally masked and at least 3 feet apart between students in the classroom.  The school department must report to the State the percentage of employees who are vaccinated.  Ms. Grondin will send the report to board members once it is complete.

  1. Business Manager’s Report:

                Attachment 1

Ms. Casparius said they have been very busy in the business office, updating wages and salaries, adding stipends, hiring new people and working with the auditors.

  1. Reports from Other School Officials:

Theresa Beaudoin said the district is very fortunate to have Assistant Superintendent Katy Grondin and school nurses dealing with COVID protocols.  She said they are very knowledgeable and provide great guidance.

Kim Silsby thanked every staff member from every position for their level of commitment.  She said it has been fun seeing students in school.  There have been challenges with getting students to keep their masks over the nose. The drop off process has also been challenging.  There are significantly more parents dropping off students than in the past and the school was not designed for that.  After trying a couple of different scenarios, it has been worked out.  She thanked parents for cooperating with that process.

Sarah Landry said they are excited that the Pre-K program starts tomorrow.  There are no Pre-K slots available for the morning but there are still some slots available for the afternoon.

Troy Alexander said it was exciting today just to walk around the school and watch everybody engaged.  Hussey will have an open house outside on the playground September 14 with a rain date on the 16th.  The schedule is from 5:30 to 6:00 for grades K – 2 and 6:30 for grades 3 – 6.

Jon Millett said it is great having the athletes back on the fields.  The homecoming bonfire is scheduled for September 22 in Mill Park.
