Title 1 Summer Camp

The Augusta School Department's Title I program wrapped up its summer session, leaving students with not only enhanced literacy and math skills but also a deeper connection to their home state of Maine. The program, designed for students in grades K-5, was filled with engaging activities that combined education with the natural beauty and unique culture of Maine.

Students explored Maine through a variety of hands-on activities. One of the highlights was a virtual reality field trip through Acadia National Park, allowing students to experience the park’s breathtaking landscapes from the classroom. They also enjoyed a visit from a local beekeeper, learning about the vital role bees play in our ecosystem.

We were fortunate to get a “Loon Trunk” from Maine Fisheries and Wildlife. It included hands-on, activity-based teaching tools to support understanding of loons in our local lakes.  Students were mesmerized to see an actual loon wing, bones, skull, egg, and a variety of books and posters about how we can care for these precious birds.

Students got a taste of Maine’s coastal life through a presentation on lobstering, where they learned about the industry that is so important to the state’s economy. They even learned how to band lobster claws and safely pick up a live lobster. In addition to these experiences, the kids grew their own plants, fostering both a sense of responsibility and an understanding of local agriculture.

Problem-solving skills were put to the test with the Sphero Indi cars, where students worked on coding and navigation challenges. The fun didn’t stop there—students also enjoyed a glow party, bringing excitement and celebration to the learning environment. Lastly, the LC Bates Museum delivered a fascinating presentation on the mammals of Maine, giving students an up-close look at the wildlife that inhabits their state.

A special shout-out goes to the dedicated teachers who made this program possible: Hayley Valdiva, Brenda Gasperini, Maureen Cooper, Caroline Eldridge, Hollie Pellitier, Lauren Dow, Amanda Marquis, Shannon Bessey, Emily Stevenson, Alicia Parker, Karen Douglas, Kim Scholz, Shannon Morgan, Karen Parker, and Theresa Violette. Their hard work and passion for education ensured that students not only improved their academic skills but also created lasting memories of a summer filled with learning and fun.
