Autism Awareness Night, organized by Cony High School's head football coach B.L. Lippert, has become a significant event across the state of Maine, raising money for organizations that support individuals with autism, including the Children's Center in Augusta.
Over the past seven years, this initiative has grown from a small exhibition game to a statewide movement, now involving 39 teams and countless supporters proudly wearing Autism Awareness t-shirts. The event is designed to raise awareness about autism, and it has already led to meaningful changes for families attending sports games. For instance, some schools are now providing sensory bags at major athletic events, which include items like headphones and fidget toys to help children manage sensory overload during games.
Coach Lippert and the entire Cony football team’s dedication to this cause underscores the power of community support and understanding for individuals with autism. Their efforts are a shining example of how sports can promote inclusivity and foster awareness.
